it's really going to take alot.
wal-mart is evil. here are links to a bunch of articles about how wal-mart likes to...
fire whistleblowers, women and black truck drivers.
and mooch off taxpayers like you.
oh, and violate child labor laws.
so why do people shop there? well, people who work at wal-mart can't afford to shop anywhere else.
not to mention the fact not one single wal-mart employee in the u.s. belongs to a union. ain't america grand?

There was a WalMart in Quebec (that be in Canada, eh?) that unionised. Walmart took it to court, but the union won. So Walmart closed the store.
The union sued Walmart saying it only closed because it unionised and the court agreed. Walmart has paid millions in fines to-date because of this but they consider it worth it. They are using this store as an example to other stores of what happens if they unionise.
Because of Canada's pro-union legislation, Walmart is even (rumours say) thinking of closing down all Canadian stores and pulling out of the country rather than risk a unionised store. Personally, I'm looking forward to that day.

So the most successful retailer in the world doesn't belong to a union.
Is there a message here?

Yeah: they consider profit more important than people's welfare!

I think there is a different message.
Unions used to be effective, now they are more powerful. Now I know, if I am ever forced to join a union to work, and I go work for Wal-mart and not ever have to worry about that.... =)
The only things Unions do in this day and age is cause less productivity and cause people not in a union to get less because 'you have to keep the union happy'. Tell you what, I don't think my boss gave me a large enough raise last year, so I am going to make signs and display them outside the base telling people to boycott this company. You know what that will get me? FIRED, and so it should. But if I am part of a Union, not only do I get more money, but I get better benefits, and more vacation as well. "But I only diserve a bigger raise" I say. "You just don't understand your own worth. Believe us, we know what you need more than you do," says the Union...
Gosh, do I sound as bitter as I feel.

It doesn't stop closing unionizing stores.
Strong-arming supply chains to control all component prices, employing juniors almost exclusively in a 'profession' where homicide rates are 2 or 3rd highest, providing no health cover, making most positions part time to avoid full time compensations, and being so succesful at filling Congressmans pockets that minimum wage rises are 25% below all other professions.
Mind you, I am talking about the fast food industry. Where did you eat this week?

Oh yeah... and as for Unions -v- Companies, don't be fooled by either ethos. Whenever that pendulum swings to far EITHER way, the average labourer is going to get the shaft.
