weezer

So, Joe and Brad are going to see Weezer at the Broomfield Event Center (Q: What do Weezer and New Kids on the Block Have in common. A: Broomfield Event Center) in a few weeks.

I decided not to go with them. I mean, it's really not worth $50 for me to sit and hope they play Buddy Holly. What's with these hooomies dissin' my girl? Why do they gotta frooont? ... Oooo eeee oooo I look just like Buddy Holly oh oh oh and your're Mary Tyler Moore...

Ah, mid-90s rock. The soundtrack of my life.

I wonder if they'll play Undone!! If you want to destroy my sweater...hold this thread as I walk away (as I walk away)

Sniff, sniff.

oh oh oh oh oh HANGIN' TOUGH

Listen up everybody if you want to take a chance...

Are you serious? Dude, they're like... adults and stuff.

Eighteen years later, they're still "Hangin' Tough." The oldest "Kid," Jonathan Knight, now a real estate developer, will turn 40 later this year. Since the band's demise, former members Donnie Wahlberg, 38, and Joey McIntyre, 35, have seen acting success, while Danny Wood, 38, has worked as a music producer and Knight's brother, Jordan, 37, has continued to record.

Who was is your favorite New Kid?

(I use the "music" tag loosely here.)

ah, digital music

I write this post from a safe place. A place where I know, no matter how many times I click "Reader Comments: Allow," no one will be allowed to comment on (a) my age or (b) my weirdass taste in music.

HA!

Thanks to the efforts of a certain sweetie I have all of my old college mp3s on HotCop's new computer for my iTuning pleasure.

Granted, he did all this work over the 4th of July weekend, and I've been listening ever since but there was something about the way Party Shuffle selected a live version of Sarah McLachlan singing Oh, Canada! followed by Cotton Eyed Joe followed by Marc Cohen's True Companion that really inspired me to write.

Because, the truth is, I had Napster in college. Free, illegal Napster in all it's glory. Napster is the reason I have Take On Me (A Ha!) as well as She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy (Kenny Chesney).

Before I went to college, I didn't know what an mp3 was. My friend Drooly Dave set me up with Napster and WinAmp one day when I was mad at my first-semester-freshman-year-best-friend. Isn't everyone best friends with everyone else first semester freshman year? See, Drooler told me, this is what Lauren can't get to work. I spent many a Wednesday night downloading music when I should've been studying Psych 101.

Now there is some music I've paid for: that song from one of the last episodes of Veronica Mars' 2nd season. You know the one; the one that was playing when Logan told her their love was epic. Epic! A couple of (legally) free iTunes most inspired by episodes of The OC when it was good.

And, really, who's music collection would be complete without G-love & Special Sauce?

1993

I'm takin' it back to the old school, cause I'm a old fool who's so cool.

Yes, 1993, it was a good year. As I learned on Bob this morning, 1993 is the year that brought us both Whoop There It Is and Let's Talk about Sex (Yo Pep! I don't think they gonna play this on the radio.) Yes, I was listening to something other than NPR. This is mostly due to the fact I was running a tish late for work and WHRV has the BBC World News beginning at 9 every weekday morning. I don't care for BBC World News, thanks. It pales in comparison to Morning Edition.

I was in middle school (not junior high) in 1993, at the height of my awkward phase (which lasted oh, til I graduated from high school. Gah!). Does anyone else remember the "Whoop There It Is" t-shirts? IIRC, most of them were white with blue letters. Maybe that was just the ones the 7th graders had. Ah, Tag Team. Anyhow.

So, Salt-n-Pepa. HotCop and I both still know all the words to Shoop. Surely you do, too. You know-- yum, yum chocolate chip honey dip can I getta scoop? Baby take a ride in my coupe, even?? I wasn't QUITE as familiar with the lyrics to Let's Talk About Sex but I do remember feeling very embarrassed when they played it on the radio, and I was in the car with one or both of my parents.

Was middle school awful only for me? I had an awful time-- already a head taller than everyone else and wearing Keds everywhere. They were the only shoes I wore. Little did I know I was very fashion-forward-- well, who am I kidding really I was just a dork.

A dork who knew all the words to Shoop.

speed of sound

Climb up, up in the trees,
every chance that you get,
is a chance you seize.
How long am I gonna stand,
with my head stuck under the sand?
I'll start before I can stop,
before I see things the right way up.

you don't know.

people come, people go
some grow young, some grow cold
i woke up in between
a memory and a dream.

but let's get to the point, let's roll another joint
and let's head on down the road--
there's somewhere i gotta go.
and you don't know how it feels.
you don't know how it feels to be me.

american idol or not-- the girl can sing.

hotcop and i went to see kelly clarkson last night. air force laughed at me "i just can't forget the whole american idol thing." yeah, whatever. she can sing.

i made a prediction about the concert demographics before we got there: some girls around our age, maybe some of their boyfriends/husbands and a few teenie boppers. boy, was i wrong. there were alot of mother/daughter combinations, with some of the daughters dressed so we went "how OLD is that girl and why is she wearing a hooters t-shirt??" or "is she REALLY old enough to buy that beer?" for the older girls.

all in all, though, good show. kelly sounded almost exactly like she does on the radio/cd, with enough improvisation thrown in so we knew she wasn't faking it. the whole sounding the same thing really can be a blessing or a curse: reference tori amos (who sounds BETTER in concert) and any random pop-rock band (who sound like crap in concert).

some thoughts:

  • hotcop and i are still those people who stand up and dance throughout the concert. although at the end we were like whew! the poor girl next to us asked if she could be our friend because the people she came with were like bumps on a log.
  • we are also those people who sing along. sue me. the average age of the audience was oh, 15, so they were singing along too.
  • when she started singing annie lennox's why we wondered if any of these kids had ever heard of annie lennox. sheesh.
  • kelly's got some junk in her trunk. and a bit of a muffin top. but it's refreshing. BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT REAL GIRLS ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE. whew.
  • some people thought it was club kelly, and dressed accordingly.
  • we got free schick intuition razors, cause that's who sponsored her tour. where was my free bud light when they sponsored tim mcgraw and faith hill?
  • the sevs (7-11) run on the way home reminded me of our crazy days dancing at bar norfolk and have a nice day cafe. sigh.
  • pop music is fun.

i am not ashamed.

i have been known to have cheesy taste in music. i am crazy about dolly parton. "it takes alot of money to look this cheap."

this morning, i heard a neil diamond song on bob fm (they really do play anything.) sweet caroline! it made me want to dig up my roommate's live neil diamond album so i could sing along to mandy on my way to work.

oh mandy... well you came and you gave without taking...

sigh.
